Interesting Facts About Amber.....
Amber comes from the hardened fossilized resin of pine trees. Its' properties make it warm to the touch and amber can produce static electricity when rubbed. The Ancient Greeks called amber 'electron' which is where the word electricity comes from. In the Middle Ages powdered amber was burnt as aromatic incense.
A high proportion of amber comes from the Baltic where it is found in the sea or mines. The sea amber gets carried by currents and tides and can be transported as far as Norway, Denmark and the east coast of Britain. Other countries where amber can be found are Sicily, Burma, Romania and the USA.
Amber is a soft stone which ranges in colour from golden yellow to orange, red and warm brown. It is facetted but more usually cut or polished en cabochon or as beads. Top quality amber is clear and translucent, but inclusions often make it rarer and enhance its value. White amber is often called bone amber, and some stones may contain sun spangle inclusions which form a pattern resembling nasturtium leaves.
