Interesting Facts About Aquamarines......
Aquamarine is the March birthstone and is a form of beryl, from which emeralds and rubies are also derived. The name comes from the Latin for water and sea ("aqua" and "mare") because of its distinctive blue/green colour which is down to the presence of iron.
On the Mohs scale, aquamarine rates a 7.5 so it is a fairly durable gemstone. It is found in Brazil, Africa, Mexico, North America and the Middle East.
Aquamarine was considered a lucky stone by sailors and was carried by them on long voyages to keep them safe. The aquamarine stone is also used by crystal healers to restore harmony and balance to the body. Its' properties are thought to be increased by leaving it in water exposed to sunlight.
Cleaning aquamarine gemstones should be done with care. Use soapy water or professional cleaning products for jewellery, but avoid anything with alcohol or ultrasonic cleaners.
