Do Diamonds Lose Their Sparkle?

Why do people allow their diamond jewellery to get so shabby? Diamond jewellery requires care attention or pretty soon your sparkling diamonds are reduced to looking like dirty glass.

My opinion is that people seem to think that diamond jewellery only sparkles when it is new. This is simply not the case. Natural diamonds are millions of years old, so you never buy them new! Diamonds are special, they are a part of eternity, and they will never lose their sparkle.

Take this recent event that I encountered not long ago as an example. My neighbour knocks on my door in a state of panic, she has inadvertently lost her diamond ring down the plug hole (quite a common occurence). As the resident jewellery, she thinks I can help her. What she really needed was a plumber, but I was happy to help a person in need. 30 minutes later, after dismantling her U-bend, the ring was recovered. She was delighted. Whilst rinsing the diamond ring, I notice the state of it. It seemed that she never took it off, even when washing up (which is how it ended up down the plug hole) the result was that dirt had built up under and around the diamond setting. After a little lesson on cleaning jewellery, I offered to take the ring in to the workshop to give it a polish. I gave it back to her a couple of days later and she was overjoyed. She couldn't believe that it could look like the day she first received it again.

It's simple really, look after your diamond jewellery and they will last lifetimes. When diamonds get dirty, clean them. When the rhodium coating of white gold starts to fade, go back to your jeweller and ask them to re-polish and rhodium them. Thats the beauty of them, they can always look like the first time you bought them!
