Interesting Facts About Coral....
Beautiful orange or apricot coral is an organic gemstone which is formed by deposits made by colonies of sea creatures that inhabit deep, warm seas. It grows in branches making it resemble underwater trees, with the majority of the coral used in jewellery manufacture found in the Mediterranean Sea or the Pacific Ocean off Japan and Taiwan.
Once upon a time these coral trees were harvested by using drag nets, but because of their fragility modern day techniques are gentler and more environmentally sound with deep sea divers collecting the branches by hand. The most valuable colours are red, black, and pale pink (angel skin coral).
As a soft and porous gemstone, you should bear in mind that coral can be easily scratched or damaged by chemicals like chlorine, alcohol, ammonia and nail polish remover. The coral earrings from The Diamond Store have a protective mount to prevent damage and can be cleaned very easily by wiping them gently with a soft moist cloth.
Coral is a symbol of energy which is supposed to help the wearer overcome lethargy and depression and avoid fear and panic. Pink coral restores harmony to the heart.
