The cut of a diamond: its depth and width, size, shape, angle and positioning of the diamond facets will determine its brilliance. Of all the characteristics of a diamond that determines its value the cut is the one thing that is entirely manipulated by the diamond cutter. This makes the difference between a brilliant diamond and a diamond with a dull appearance. A diamond can have a perfect colour and clarity grade but when poorly cut will look like a piece of dull and lifeless cut glass.
Light is constantly entering into the diamond through the table (which is the largest facet). Once inside the light will travel within the stone by reflecting off the stone’s many facets which essentially act as a collection of mirrors. In a perfectly cut diamond the light will then bounce back out through the table to the eye in the form of brilliance.
Having said all of the above, there is one setting which really does enhance the brilliance of a stone. Illusion settings are when the diamonds are mounted on glass which adds dimension to its size and light refraction.
