An immaculately dressed man walks up to a jewellery counter and takes his time inspecting the various silver, gold and platinum earrings.  He finally selects a pair of flawless one carat diamond studs.  The assistant tells him “Your wife will love these”.  His reply is “They are not for my wife.  They are for me”.  And when the girl looks

more closely she notices that the man is already wearing a beautiful pair of earrings. This recent incident illustrates that men wearing earrings is becoming so commonplace that you may not even notice who is wearing them.  Actors, business men, sports and pop stars and blue collar workers are amongst those who wear earrings which are no longer a shocking male fashion statement but now an everyday accessory.

In the early 1980´s unwritten social rules restricted men to wearing a single stud in the left ear with anything that was too flashy or worn in the wrong ear being considered taboo.  And men certainly did not wear an earring to work.  It is good to know that nowadays real men do wear earrings.  The growing list of men who are never seen out without them include universally recognized role models David Beckham and Michael Jordan as well as the rugged footballer Andre Rison.

Some men even wear them by default as in the case of model Tyson Beckford who purchased a pair of diamond earrings for his girlfriend, and when he discovered she had been unfaithful instead of returning them decided to wear them himself!

Another story concerns Ed Bradley who was a correspondent for Sixty Minutes and decided to get his ears pierced after interviewing Liza Minnelli as  when the unlikely subject of earrings came up, Bradley expressed an interest in wearing them and Minnelli later presented him with some diamond studs.  This was in 1986 and he had to endure a lot of controversy when he wore them on camera.  But he was determined to ride out the storm and prove that men of all ages and professions can wear an earring with style. He still continues to wear a hoop or diamond earring to work and chooses from a variety of studs for social occasions.
