Over the years your beautiful jewellery can loose its shine and luster. Here are some tips for cleaning your jewellery and making that sparkle last a lifetime.
Warning: Chemicals Tarnish and Damage Your Jewellery.
Although 18 Carat gold and purer is highly resistant and does not usually tarnish, lower carat gold can be easily harmed by household chemicals such as bleach and washing detergents. More surprisingly however, chemicals in your every day products such as moisturizer, body lotion and hairspray can cause the darkening, staining and corrosion of your jewellery. To avoid the tarnishing of your gold, always remove your jewellery before doing the dishes, applying your cream or even washing your hands.
Take special care to ensure your gold does not come into contact with chemicals of any sort.
Cleaning Your Gold and Platinum:
Most Gold and Platinum jewellery can be cleaned by soaking in warm, soapy water and then gently brushed with an old toothbrush, it really is as simple as that!
What About Your Diamonds?
It is very difficult to damage diamonds, however diamonds are not indestructible. A hard blow can cause diamonds to chip or scratch. To prevent damage to your diamonds make sure that you always remove your jewellery before undertaking any intense or overly physical work. Always ensure that you store your diamond jewellery in an individual jewellery case, as contact with other jewellery pieces can cause scratches.
Too much contact with chemicals can cause your diamond to appear dull. To maintain that brightness and sparkle of your diamond try clean your diamonds regularly. Caked on grease and other dirt on the backs of the stones should be removed with warm soapy water and an old soft toothbrush and then rinsed and dried with a lint free cloth.
Caring For Your Gemstones:
Gemstones should be treated in the same way as diamonds. However take care when cleaning any sort of stone set jewellery that you do not do this in a washbasin or sink without the plug in, as if any stones loosen they will go straight down the drain.
