Lots of people are tempted by diamonds and these precious stones form some of our traditional expectations of wedding and engagement jewellery. You’ll find stunning diamonds in engagement rings, eternity rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets, all of which attract us with their sparkle.
But what is it that actually makes a beautiful diamond? Sometimes we can just tell when one stone stands out above others, or when a collection of diamonds is a really special collection, but there is a little science and craft behind that instinct we have for quality.
The key to a beautiful diamond lies in how well it satisfies our expectations as regards its colour, its cut, its clarity and its carat.
If a white diamond is affected by a slight yellow hue it is considered somewhat inferior. Diamonds do occasional come in different colours, but white diamonds are judged on how colourless they are.
The cut of a diamond determines its sparkle. It is meant to refract light entering the diamond back out towards the source. Poorly cut diamonds misdirect this light, diminishing the effect of the sparkle.
A flawlessly clear diamond will command a higher price than one with slight blemishes inside it. Some blemishes are barely visible, but they still lower the value of the stone.
Finally, the carat of the diamond refers to its weight. Naturally, a larger diamond will be more expensive.
