Rings are probably most commonly given at the engagement or wedding of a couple or on the birth of a baby as a sign of unity between the two. Rings are very versatile pieces of jewellery offering endless styles and designs as detailed below:

Solitaire Diamond Rings are most commonly used in marriage proposals. They are a single band with one diamond mounted to give maximum sparkle.

Eternity Rings consists of a number of small diamonds with the same colour and cut either encircling the whole band (full eternity ring) or just across the front (half eternity ring).  They can be used as wedding rings or are often given at the birth of a couple’s first child.

Cluster Rings (pictured) consist of a group of stones arranged in a cluster usually with a larger stone in the centre. They can be worn at any time but are popular for formal occasions because they can look very opulent.

Stackable Rings allow you to mix and match. The eternity band and wishbone rings (framing a single stone ring) are often considered as stackable rings. You can have as many types of stones as you want and depending on you finger size can wear anything from 2-4 stackable rings.

Green precious stones are meant to attract growth, prosperity and the fertility of Mother Earth. Fine quality green gemstones like emeralds are sometimes more highly prized than diamonds.

Emeralds are the sacred stone of some ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and Incas whose old mines in South America still yield some of these green gems. Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra regarded them so highly that she had her own emerald mine.

Columbia is the source of the finest emeralds, and coupled with Brazil these two South American countries produce most of the world’s emeralds.  If you want to buy a present for someone both in the of May with the zodiac sign of Gemini, then a piece of emerald jewellery is the ideal gift.

Jade is a very tough gemstone making it ideally suited for jade jewellery and also for implements, tools and weapons. In Central America the Aztecs considered this gem more highly than gold and the New Zealand Maoris carved jade instruments for festivals and warfare. The ancient Egyptians believed wearing jade jewellery encouraged for harmony, peace and love.

Garnets are named after the pomegranate which in Latin is called “granatum malum”. Garnet gemstones are most associated with being rich red in colour, but the garnet-related tsavorite has a colour range that goes from light blue-green to deep forest green to spring-like green. They are the birthstones for January and a tsavorite ring would delight anyone born in that month.

When you think about diamonds and diamond shapes, the round diamond (brilliant cut) or square diamonds (princess cut) are the ones that usually spring to mind.  But there are a number of cuts to choose from including:

Round Cuts
•    Brilliant – perfectly round diamond
•    Oval – elongated which usually looks better on wearer’s with longer fingers
•    Pear – round on one side and pointed on the other
•    Marquise – oval with two pointed ends, so called because it resembled a smile of a certain marquise.

Square Cuts
•    Princess – the square cut (pictured).
•    Emerald – rectangular shape
•    Radiant – corners are trimmed so it is an eight sided diamond
•    Asscher – is similar to a Radiant cut but with more facets. This cut was developed in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers diamond cutters of Holland who cut the world-famous Cullinan Diamond, which is the largest rough cut diamond ever found.

Heart Cuts
•    Heart – as it sounds – symbolizes love

The cut of a diamond greatly impacts on its brilliance. So if it is cut poorly it will be less luminous.

It can sometimes be difficult deciding on how to accessorise what you are wearing. The clothes are laid out ready for work or play but need something added. Some good ways to decide which pieces of jewellery to wear are:

•    Decide what types of jewellery you are in the mood to wear. If you want to look casual and understated then a pair of hoop earrings are a nice touch which matches most outfits. If you are going to work this can often be all you need.

•    If you want something fancier think about colours and sizes with a plain outfit really benefiting from a splash of colour like a large brooch or cocktail ring.

•    More obvious things are matching the necklace or pendant length to your neckline and adding a bracelet if your wrists are on display.
