According to senior sources at the Palace Prince William has decided not to wear a wedding ring following his marriage to Kate Middleton. Apparently the Prince discussed the issue with his fiancée but has chosen not to.  “He’s not a jewellery person and it is simply down to personal preference” according to an aide.

Kate will wear a wedding band fashioned from a lump of Welsh gold already owned by the Royal Family which is a long-standing tradition. Prince Harry will carry the ring and hand over in the traditional way.

Most male royals do wear a wedding ring of some kind, with the exception of the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Charles wears a gold wedding ring under a signet ring which bears his fleur-de-lys crest on the little finger of his left hand.

Apparently it is quite common for men in that level of society not to wear a traditional wedding band. Or they tend to wear it with their family signet ring, but William doesn’t have one of those.

Before the Second World War is was unheard of for men to wear wedding rings, but it became customary for soldiers serving overseas to wear a wedding band to remind them of home and their commitment to their wives and families.

Today opinion is divided on whether wearing a wedding band is obligatory or not. Most modern brides prefer this husband to wear something on their third finger left hand as a sign of their commitment and eternal love.
