Orange sapphire is made up of the mineral corundum and iron impurities which give it its' distinctive colour. This is further enhanced under heat treatment. As a group, sapphires are believed to ward off infection and convert negative emotions into feelings of peace and joy. They are also extremely hard wearing and tough.
Simillar to an orange sapphire but infinitely more highly prized and hence more expensive, is the padparadscha; the only corundum other than ruby to be given its' own name. This rare stone is a soft pinky-orange colour and derives its' name from the Sinhalese word for lotus blossum.
