Pearl is the birthstone for June and zodiac stone of Cancer and it also represents the 30th wedding anniversary. They are formed by the defence mechanisms of oysters or mollusks, who build layers of nacre around anything foreign they find within their shells, such as grit.
The range of colours varies from white through yellow, pink, green, blue and black, which are by far the rarest and hence most valuable. This is due to the type of mollusk and location they are found in. While natural pearls are the best and most highly sort, they are limited which is why cultured and imitation pearls were created. Cultured means that a foreign element has been deliberately placed within the pearl, while imitation means completely manufactured.
