On February 15th 2009, a ruby sold at Christie's in St. Moritz for a record breaking amount. Per carat the 'pigeon's blood' red ruby from Burma realised $425,000. That meant that the 8.62 carat cushion-cut gemstone fetched an amazing $3.6 million and became the property of London jeweller, Laurence Graff.
One of the largest rubies in the world however is located in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. Weighing in at an astonishing 23.1 carats the ruby, set with diamonds in a platinum ring, was mined in the 1930s from the Mogok region of Burma, now known as Myanmar.
