Interesting Facts About Diamond Sapphire Earrings......
The sapphire gemstone is the official birthstone for September and the zodiac sign for the scales of Libra. They can be given for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversaries with the special star sapphire being kept for the 65th wedding anniversary. These special gemstones are formed when the sapphire exhibits asterism and a six-rayed star can be seen in the stone. They are sometimes also called Stones of Destiny with their rays representing faith, hope and destiny.
The name sapphire originates from the Latin word "saphirus" which means blue, and from the island of Sappherine in the Arabian Sea where sapphires were once found. If a gemstone is described purely as a sapphire it implies the colour is blue only. All other stones are given a colour prefix or are collectively termed fancy sapphires which come in shades of yellow, green, white, clear, pink, orange, brown, and purple. The red corundum crystals are called rubies.
Sapphires and diamonds are such durable stones they need very little care and attention being easy to clean by using warm soapy water. They are well hidden and found in just a few places with mines in India, Burma, Ceylon, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil and Africa. From the gemstone mines the raw crystals are taken to the cutting centres to be turned into sparkling gemstones. Depending on the angle you look at them, sapphires have different intensities of colour so it is important that the raw crystals are well cut so that the colour is brought right out.
