Interesting Facts About Tsavorite.....
Tsavorite is a member of the grossular group of gemstones, which also includes garnet. Its name was given by the president of Tiffany and Co, Henry Platt, in honor of Tsavo National Park in Kenya, the country from where the stone was initially mined.
Although first found in Tanzania, the government would not provide permits to mine here. So believing there a possiblity of deposits being found in bordering Kenya, British gem prospector and geologist Campbell R. Bridges prospected there and came up trumps in 1971. It is now also found in Toliara Province and Madagascar.
Tsavorite is a strong, robust gemstone which has a hardness of around 7.5 on the Mohs scale. It does not easily crack or fracture and is one of the few gemstones that needs no treatment.
