Interesting Facts About Turquoise.......
Turquoise has been famed for its use by Native Americans and today goes to make eclectic pieces of jewellery. It is formed when water percolates through rocks, reacting with certain elements to create a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium.
The name is believed to have either come from the 16th century French words "turquois" meaning turkish or "pierre turquin" meaning dark-blue stone. Although it does not occur in Turkey, because it was traded at Turkish markets it is believed merchants thought that was its origin.
The colour variations are dependent on the mineral content: more copper and it will appear bluer, more aluminum and it will look greener. Throughout the turqouise stone are dark markings known as the matrix. On the Mohs scale it only has a hardness of between 5 and 6.
High strength, good quality natural stones are rare and hence expensive, so much of the turquoise you see has undergone treatment to make them less porous and more usuable.
