The word 'aquamarine' means 'water of the sea' and was originally used by sailors as protection against the mythical sea sirens. The stone's beautiful colour is also reminiscent of clear sparkling seas, and because of these links with water it will come as no surprise to find out that the aquamarine is the zodiac stone for Pisces (the sign of the fish) and is the birthstone for people born in the month of March.
The aquamarine has been found in Egyptian sarcophaguses as a method of payment for the mummy’s passage through to the next world. It is supposed to represent the characteristics of courage, creativity and tolerance and is believed to give the wearer greater intelligence and rationality. The aquamarine's healing properties include curing headaches and sore throats.
The colour of the aquamarine ranges from light sky blue to blue-green and deep sea blue, with the colour varying on where it is mined. This gemstone is found mainly in Brazil, but there are also mines in the Ukraine, Nigeria, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Arizona. In contrast to emeralds, aquamarines are often completely flawless and it is rare to find one with a visible flaw.
