Interesting Facts About Blue Topaz.....
Blue topaz is the birthstone for December and is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine. On the Mohs scale, the blue topaz rates a hardness factor of 8 which ranks it below diamond but above tanzanite.
Pure topaz is actually transparent and without colour but is tinted by impurities, usually yellows, browns, greens, pinks and reds. It is rarely blue by nature, but instead turns this colour through heat and irradiation treatment. The biggest stones are mined from Brazil. One of the most magnificent examples of a blue topaz is found in the Portuguese crown, the Braganza.
Topaz is believed to protect against enemies and dispel anger and is found within the foundations of the twelve gates to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. It comes from the Greek work "topazos" actually meaning "green gemstone" and the stones have been known about for at least 2000 years. Believed to stimulate the endocrine system and fight blood disorders, these sensational stones were once considered for their curative powers as much as their beauty.
