Interesting Facts About Rubies....
The name ruby comes from the Latin 'rubens' meaning red. As the colour of life, love and passion the ruby has for centuries offered a perfect way for people to express powerful feelings for each other. Often called the 'King of Gems', one myth tells of how rubies sprung from the blood of the Demon God Vala and are frequently used by healers to cure headaches.
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, one of the hardest minerals on Earth, of which the sapphire is also a variety. It has traces of elements such as chrome, iron or titanium which form the colour of the gemstone.
Some rubies have a wonderful silky shine which is caused by very fine needles of rutile. This sometimes creates a rare star ruby, which occurs when the rutile forms a star-shaped deposit within the ruby causing a light effect known as asterism. This forms a six prong star which seems to glide magically across the surface of the stone.
If you are thinking of buying a pair of ruby earrings from The Diamond Store then they are perfect for someone born in July, as they are the birthstone for that month, and they are also the zodiac stone for Scorpio.
