Lab-Grown Diamonds vs Mined Diamonds: A Full Comparison

When it comes to choosing a diamond, one of the biggest questions many buyers face today is whether to opt for a lab-grown diamond or a natural diamond. At The Diamond Store we believe that both can be beautiful, lasting jewellery choices - it’s a matter of priorities and budget. Here’s everything you need to know.

What are we comparing?

  • Mined diamonds: These are the natural diamonds formed deep in the Earth billions of years ago and recovered through mining operations.
  • Lab-grown diamonds: These are created in laboratories under conditions that replicate how natural diamonds form. They share the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds.

Despite their different origins, they are diamonds in every sense of the word: same atomic structure (carbon crystals), same sparkle, same durability.

Key Differences: Origin, Perception & Ethics

Origin

With mined diamonds: the carbon atoms were subjected to intense heat and pressure deep underground millions or even billions of years ago.

With lab‐grown diamonds: scientists use a tiny diamond seed, introduce carbon under high pressure or high temperature, and produce a diamond in a controlled environment.

Perception & status

Many people value mined diamonds for their “natural heritage” - formed over eons by nature. That sense of rarity and tradition still resonates with people today.

Lab-grown diamonds appeal to buyers focused on sustainability, modern technology or getting more carat for budget. They are increasingly popular with younger buyers.

Ethical & environmental considerations

Mined diamonds, when sourced responsibly (for example under the Kimberley Process), can be conflict-free and ethical.

Lab-grown diamonds avoid mining altogether; meaning less disturbance of the earth, fewer logistics and (depending on production methods) potentially lower environmental impact.

Quality & Certification: They Are Graded the Same

One of the most important things to know: lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds are graded by the exact same standards. The diamond trade uses the Four Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight.

So, whether you choose a lab or mined diamond, if you are buying one that is G/VS1 (for example) the quality in terms of brilliance, durability and appearance should be indistinguishable.

Because lab-grown diamonds tend to cost less per carat, you often can get “more diamond” (in terms of colour or clarity) for your budget when you choose lab-grown.

And yes, lab-grown diamonds can be certified by the same independent gemological bodies (for example Gemological Institute of America (GIA), International Gemological Institute (IGI)) that certify mined diamonds. The certificate will clearly state if it is lab grown.

Price Comparison - How Much Cheaper Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Let’s get into the numbers. How much can you really save by choosing a lab-grown diamond? The exact amount will vary by quality, size, setting and metal, but here’s a breakdown.

Why mined diamonds cost more

Mining, extraction, transportation, sorting and certification add significant cost.

Mined diamonds are a finite resource which influences market pricing and perception of value.

How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds?

A 1-carat mined diamond ring in G/SI2 quality: ~ £4,600.
The “equivalent” 1-carat lab-grown diamond ring (of slightly better quality, G/VS1): ~ £3,500. That’s around 25% cheaper.

Lab Diamonds vs Mined Diamonds Price Comparisons

A cluster lab-grown 1-carat ring (H/Si quality, 9K white gold): ~ £1,100 - representing over 100% cheaper compared with the example mined ring.

0.20ct mined: ~£280.
Lab-grown: ~£210.

1.00ct mined (0.50ct each): ~£1,600.
Lab-grown same carat: ~£1,300.

Lab-grown diamonds are not cheap, but they are more affordable than mined diamonds at the same quality. Savings of 25% to 50% per carat are realistic.

Pros & Cons at a Glance

Mined Diamonds

Pros:

  • A natural origin with deep-time heritage.
  • A perceived luxury status and rarity.
  • Strong legacy values which can matter for heirlooms.

Cons:

  • Typically higher price per carat.
  • Mining may involve environmental and social impact if not managed responsibly.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Pros:

  • Same sparkle, same durability, same diamond structure.
  • Generally lower price per carat, allowing you better quality for the budget.
  • Fewer concerns about mining impact (though production energy use is still worth asking about).

Cons:

  • Some buyers may perceive them to have less prestige than natural diamonds.
  • Resale value is less predictable as the market for lab-grown diamonds is newer.

What to Consider When Buying – For Both Types

Always check for certification (Four Cs and origin statement). Lab-grown diamonds should be clearly labelled.

For mined diamonds, ask about ethical sourcing, traceability, and compliance with the Kimberley Process.

Compare “apples to apples”: same carat, same cut, same colour & clarity, same metal setting. Try to isolate differences in origin only.

Think about resale / investment: we advise you to buy the diamond you love, not the one you think will ‘hold its value’ better. But if resale value matters to you, understand that mined diamonds may carry legacy value, while lab-grown diamonds are newer to the market.

Think about future maintenance / wear: whichever you choose, ensure the setting and metal are high quality (e.g., 18K gold, platinum) so the diamond can last a lifetime. Check your jeweller’s warranty.

Be clear about budget vs priorities: if sustainability and value for money are important, lab-grown may be the better fit; if natural origin and traditional luxury matter more, then mined may be preferable.

Which Is Best For You?

At the end of the day: both mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds can give you a beautiful, lifetime jewellery piece.

If you want something that is fully natural and has historical prestige, a mined diamond may be the right choice. If you prefer something that is technologically clever, more affordable per carat and socially & ethically appealing that aligns with your values, a lab-grown diamond could be ideal.

No matter your choice, it never compromises on sparkle or quality. So, whichever you pick, you’ll be investing in something beautiful and lasting.
