The formula for the perfect diamond

Looking to buy a diamond, and want it to be the best quality possible? Here’s our formula for the perfect diamond.

The formula for the perfect diamond

In the quest for the perfect engagement ring or piece of fine jewellery, you’ll want your diamond to be the best quality it can be. You may have heard of the 4C’s – the ‘formula’ that makes up a diamond, including its cut, clarity, colour and carat. Understanding the formula for the perfect diamond is key to unlocking the ‘perfect’ diamond, and how you can get the best stone for your budget

Cut: The cause of the sparkle

The cut of a diamond significantly influences its sparkle and overall appeal. It’s not merely about the shape (round, oval, princess, etc.) but more about how well the diamond has been cut and shaped from its rough state. The precision in the cut determines how light is reflected and refracted within the diamond, contributing to its brilliance and fire. A well-cut diamond will exhibit a balance between brightness, fire, and scintillation

Colour: From bright white to coloured

Colour in diamonds ranges from colourless to shades of yellow and brown, classified from D (colourless) to Z (light colour). The closer a diamond is to being colourless, the rarer and more valuable it is considered. Colourless diamonds (D-F) allow the most light to pass through the stone, which makes them the most sparkly. However, the colour can be a personal choice – some people actually like the unique colour scale of ‘imperfect’ diamonds.

Clarity: True perfection

Clarity refers to the absence of internal inclusions and external blemishes. ‘Inclusion’ means blemish to the stone. The clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I), with various grades in between. While higher clarity diamonds are more prized, many inclusions are microscopic and do not detract from a diamond’s beauty to the naked eye, and would only be able to be seen by a professional

Carat Weight: The measure of luxury

Carat weight measures a diamond‘s size, but it’s essential to balance size with the quality of the cut, colour, and clarity. A larger diamond is not always more beautiful if it lacks in other areas

So how do you get the best of all the 4C’s?

Finding the sweet spot

A diamond with a clarity grade of VS1-VS2 often presents a ‘sweet spot’, offering a visually ‘clean’ appearance without the premium price of a Flawless or Internally Flawless diamond – allowing you to achieve a ‘better’ diamond for your budget

The weight of elegance

Consider the overall balance of the Four Cs when selecting carat weight. A slightly smaller diamond of exceptional cut, colour, and clarity can often outshine a larger stone of lower quality

The ideal proportions

While preferences for diamond shapes may vary, the aim for an ideal cut is universal. The goal is a diamond that allows for maximum light return through the top of the stone, creating that sought-after sparkle. This is achieved by adhering to specific proportions and angles optimised for each shape. Basically, the better the cut, the more sparkle

Selecting the right shade

For those seeking the purest sparkle, a diamond in the D-F colour range is ideal. However, G-H coloured diamonds can offer a near-colourless appearance at a more accessible price point, providing an excellent balance between cost and optical performance, especially when set in white gold or platinum

Crafting your perfect diamond

The journey to finding your perfect diamond involves a blend of the Four Cs. It’s a delicate balance between art and science, where each element plays a role in the diamond’s overall beauty and worth. The ‘perfect’ diamond – of course – is subjective, and based on which elements of the diamond you value most. The diamond that speaks to you is ‘the one’. Want to find out more?
