Found the perfect ring? The next step is finding the perfect fit.
Whether you’re choosing a ring for yourself, buying a gift or planning a surprise proposal, knowing the right ring size will help ensure it feels comfortable and secure from the moment it’s put on.
Here’s how to measure ring size accurately, plus a few ways to find someone else’s size without giving the surprise away.
What is ring size?
Ring size refers to the measurement used to determine how a ring will fit around your finger. In the UK, ring sizes are typically represented by letters, with half sizes available on some rings for a more precise fit.
The right size should feel comfortable and secure. A ring should slide over the knuckle without too much resistance but shouldn’t feel loose enough to move around or slip off.

How to measure your ring size
For the most accurate result, we recommend using a proper ring-sizing tool or having your finger professionally measured.
-
Use a ring sizer or app
A ring sizer is one of the easiest ways to measure your finger at home. Simply try different sizes until you find one that fits comfortably over your knuckle and sits securely at the base of your finger.
Remember that your fingers can change slightly in size throughout the day, so avoid measuring when your hands are particularly hot or cold.
Order a free ring sizer here for the most accurate fit, or download our ring sizer app and check your ring size right away. -
Measure a ring you already own
Already have a ring that fits perfectly? You can use it as a guide.
Choose a ring worn on the same finger you’re buying for, as finger sizes can vary between hands and individual fingers. A ring-sizing app or specialist tool can then be used to measure its internal diameter and determine the corresponding UK size. -
Visit a jeweller
If you want to be completely confident in the fit, visit a jeweller and have your finger professionally measured. This can be particularly helpful when choosing an engagement ring, wedding ring or another piece you plan to wear every day. Most high street jewellers will measure your chosen ring size for free.

How to secretly find someone’s ring size
Buying a ring as a surprise? There are a few ways to find their size without asking them directly.
-
Borrow a ring they already wear
Choose one you know they wear on the correct finger and use a ring-sizing tool or app to determine its size. Just make sure you return it before they notice. -
Ask someone close to them
A friend or family member may already know their ring size – or be able to find out without raising suspicion. Ask someone to take them shopping or casually try on rings together. That way, they can make a note of the size that fits while keeping your plans under wraps.
If you can only estimate their size, check the resizing options for your chosen ring before purchasing. Some designs – such as ones with diamonds all the way around the band – can't be resized.

When is the best time to measure ring size?
Finger size can fluctuate slightly depending on temperature, time of day and other factors.
For the best indication of your usual size, measure when your hands are at a comfortable, normal temperature. Avoid measuring immediately after exercise or when your hands are particularly hot or cold, and take a couple of measurements at different times if you’re unsure.
Does ring width affect the fit?
Yes. Wider bands can feel tighter than slim, delicate rings, so you may find you need a slightly larger size depending on the design.
This is particularly worth considering when choosing wider wedding bands, signet rings or statement styles.
What if you’re between ring sizes?
If you fall between two sizes, the right choice can depend on the ring design, band width and how you prefer your jewellery to fit.
You want the ring to feel secure without being uncomfortably tight. If you’re unsure, speak to our team of experts before ordering, particularly for rings with wider bands or more intricate settings.

How should a ring fit?
A well-fitting ring should:
- Sit comfortably at the base of your finger
- Feel secure without pinching
- Slide over your knuckle with gentle resistance
- Stay relatively still rather than constantly spinning
- Come off without excessive pulling
If your ring regularly spins, slides easily over your knuckle or feels as though it could fall off, it may be too large. If it pinches, leaves a deep indentation or is difficult to remove, it may be too small.

What happens if you order the wrong ring size?
Firstly - don’t panic. Depending on the design, many rings can be resized or exchanged for another size.
However, not every style can be resized in the same way. Eternity rings and designs with diamonds or gemstones set around a large proportion of the band can be more difficult to alter, so it’s worth checking before you buy.
If you’re choosing an engagement ring as a surprise and aren’t completely certain of their size, finding out your resizing or exchange options beforehand can give you extra peace of mind. We offer 30 days for refunds and 60 for exchanges – plenty of time to get the perfect fit.
Can you measure ring size with string?
You may have seen at-home methods involving wrapping string or paper around your finger. While they can provide a rough indication, they aren’t the most reliable way to choose an important ring.
String and paper can stretch, twist or be pulled too tightly, and even a small difference in measurement can affect the fit. For a more accurate result, use a proper ring sizer or sizing app, measure an existing ring or visit a jeweller.
