What Is Hallmarking?

UK hallmarking is the official way to verify the purity of precious metals, using modern technology. Applied by an Assay Office, a hallmark appears as a small, stamped symbol on your jewellery, confirming it meets legal standards for gold, silver and platinum.

What Jewellery Is Hallmarked?

Every precious metal piece we sell is either hallmarked according to UK legal standards or is exempt from hallmarking due to its lightweight nature.

Hallmarking is required by law for:

  • Gold items weighing 1 g or more
  • Silver items weighing 7.78 g or more
  • Platinum items weighing 0.5 g or more

What About Items That Weigh Less Than This?

Some of our silver and gold vermeil pieces are designed to be lightweight and don’t meet the hallmarking threshold. Because these items fall below the legal weight requirement for hallmarking, they legally do not require a hallmark, and your item will not have a hallmark stamp on it.

In Short:

Most of our jewellery is hallmarked, giving you the official assurance of quality and authenticity. A small selection - especially certain delicate designs - aren’t hallmarked, because they fall under the UK’s legal exemption limits.

How Do I know It’s Genuine If It’s Not Hallmarked?

Even if an item from The Diamond Store isn’t hallmarked, you can trust it’s genuine. All our jewellery is crafted using certified precious metals sourced from reputable suppliers. Items that fall below the legal weight threshold for hallmarking – like certain delicate silver and gold vermeil pieces - are legally exempt from requiring a hallmark but are still made to the same high standards. If you'd like confirmation about a specific piece, our customer care team will be happy to help.
